Hi Jackie, I decided to share...feel free to post the
info
I saw Micki's post and decided I would share my
situation. Thanks. Lisa
1) What state did you start your career in adult
literacy? Tennessee
2) How did you enter the field and into what role? A
friend called me and told me there was an immediate
opening in the adult education field (GED teacher) and
I was hired. I wanted to work while working toward a
Masters in Arts History
3) How did you move within the field? Consider changes
in:
-- role: Teacher, Facilitator, Presenter, Peer
Trainer (types of classes: GED,ESL,literacy,AE, )
-- provider type: This program started as a small
literacy program, was merged with ABE, then, Families
First and ESOL were added. Now it includes computer
literacy as well. We have two FF sites, two evening
class sites, and one day class. Recently, Computer
classes were added and ESOL in the workplace. We are
a flexible program that will try lots of things;
including ABE/ESOL in the workplace.
-- part-time to full-time or vice-versa: part-time,
later: I started with 6 hours per week, increased to
20 hours per week, increased to 25 hours during the
day and 6 evening hours. Finally, with support of the
supervisor, school board, and school director I became
the first full-time year-round AE teacher in our
county. This was due to the fact that the school
system supplements my salary and benefit package.
-- promotion I have served as a facilitator for EFF in
Tennessee. That part of our professional development
was not offered this program year. I have completed
several pilot projects.
-- location (did you need to relocate for the job?)no

4) Did you leave the field, if so, to what position,
and why? Never left, but I do other things in addition
to AE. I am also an adjunct professor at the local
community college
5) If you left the field, did you return and if so to
what role or
position?
6) To whom does the top pay go in your state or area?
not sure
7) What supports or resources, if any, were helpful to
you along the
way? Action research grants, peer coaching,
professional development activities, a supportive
supervisor, great people at the Center for Literacy
Studies.
8) Other thoughts? I took the AE job as a simple way
to work in education while I pursued something else,
but the longer I stayed the more I wanted to stay.
Then, once I was full-time, I dedicated myself to the
field. Last year I had some physical problems, some
of my students passed away, and I had lots of burn
out. I took a break in the summer and have decided to
rededicate myself to AE. This year things are going
well and I am having good success with the AE
learners.
