Dear friends, As Founder/Director of a small private foundation, for 2003 I have decided to give a free gift to seven adult learners. The gift is a free membership in VALUE (Voice For Adult Learners United For Education) that costs $20, and provides learners access to leadership development. I will be giving seven free memberships (good through August 2005). I will give one to an adult learner living in each of these seven states: New Hampshire, South Carolina, Colorado, North Dakota, Montana, Utah, and Idaho. This is also a surprise $140 gift to VALUE if you can kindly keep the secret. I will present this gift of 7 new members to VALUE the first week of January and reply to each of you who nominated at that time as well. I need your help to identify recipients. Adult learners can also nominate themselves or another learner. Deadline for receiving nominations by email is 10am, Wednesday December 31st. I will review nominations and give priority to the first ones received. In case nominations are received on close to the same day, your sentences about merit will make the difference. To nominate an adult learner: 1) Find out if the individual would like this free gift, if he/she wants to become involved in learner leadership -- either within a program, in a local area, or nationally. 2) Email me with "Nomination" as the subject line. In the message text, you must include the name (first and last), the preferred mailing address, telephone (and whether home or work number), and the person's fax and/or email if available. It is also helpful to know if the individual has an affiliation, e.g. a literacy program, a literacy student group, etc. Add a sentence or two to your message about the merit of your nomination: the desire to become an involved adult learner leader and/or the hardship to pay $20. Email nominations to: Aldenwrite@aol.com. Or, fax to (301) 270-2042 before 10am any day. I will complete a membership application form using the emailed information. This nomination information will be kept strictly confidential. Only VALUE and I will see it. VALUE will in turn mail a membership welcome letter to the recipient individuals as soon as it can in 2004. To learn about VALUE, click on this website: www.valueusa.org. Members receive benefits that can be most accurately outlined more up to date by VALUE, but to the best of my knowledge, membership benefits include: reduced rate at the VALUE adult learner conference, a vote there in key national decisions, consideration to lead a proposed workshop there, ability to call VALUE with questions/discuss learner needs in your state, and several areas of eligibility: * to receive the Susan Green Award, * to serve in leadership roles on a VALUE committee or the Board, * to serve as state representative/coordinator of VALUE activities, and * to become a trained trainer for VALUE's new acclaimed National Core Leadership Training. Thank you for helping give 7 adult learners in 7 states this opportunity, through a free $20 membership.
