Meta,
One thing that research has documented is that low literate parents use
considerably fewer words than more literate parents and word usage is also
more constrained. One exercise I have been sharing with the family literacy
teachers I visit is to toss a ball around and have each person add to the
description of that ball. Parents love doing this and begin to understand
how to increase the variety of words used in communication with their
children.
