Colleagues,
I have been experiencing difficulties with receiving mail from the
discussion lists. I thought that some of you might have experienced the same
problems, so I am posting this message to those of you who have AOL.
All the Best,

Help using AOL with the NIFL Discussion Lists
Receiving mail from the NIFL Discussion Lists using AOL
We have discovered that AOL is currently tagging all of NIFL's Discussion
List mail as Spam. All NIFL list email is automatically placed in a "Spam"
folder, not the "Inbox," which is the default screen for AOL mail.
If you want all list mail automatically delivered to your "Inbox," you must
make the decision to uncheck the "Mail Filtered by AOL Advanced Spam Filter"
and choose "Allow mail from all senders" options in the "Spam Controls" (link
is located under the Spam mail list in the "Spam" folder). If you choose
this option, you will not be protected from any Spam or virus laden mail by AOL.
If you'd like to leave the AOL Spam settings in place, you can choose to
move individual list mail to your "Inbox" using the directions below. Once you
mark a list member's email as "This is not Spam" all list mail from that
member only will be delivered to your "Inbox". You will need to check your "Spam
folder regularly to check for new list mail from other members. As time goes
by, more and more mail from the lists will automatically be delivered to your
"Inbox" directly.
To move list mail to your "Inbox":
Click on the "Manage Mail" tab located towards the top of the mail window.
Click on the "Spam" folder under "My Mail Folders" on the left.
Highlight the mail that you want to tag.
Click the "This is not Spam" button in the bottom of that window.
Sending Mail to the NIFL Discussion Lists using AOL
NIFL has a "no attachments" policy for discussion list messages to prevent
the propagation of email borne viruses. The server views any rich text or HTML
formatting inside the body of an email as an attachment. List subscribers
that use the embedded email client in AOL's application have experienced
problems sending email to NIFL's lists. Unfortunately, the email client that AOL
versions 5-8 provides does not have the capability to send "plain text"
messages. The latest version of AOL, AOL 9, as the ability to send "plain text"
messages, but sets its mail to send in HTML format by default. Because the body
of the AOL email is formatted in HTML, the server sees it as containing
attachments and rejects it.
Sending mail using AOL Version 9:

Login to AOL and click on "Write" up in the top AOL menu bar, or "Write
Mail" in the Mail Options drop down box to open a composition window.
Right click in the area where you will compose your email.
Click the last option on the bottom of the menu: "Compose as Plain Text".
(The formatting options above the text box will then appear grayed out.)
Make sure your font is set to "Arial" and "10" and type your email.
When finished, send your email to the list (Do not add an automatic
"Signature" to your email, this may change your settings back to html).
If you are ever in doubt as to what setting you are in, remember to check
the tool bar above the composition window, if the formatting options are grayed
out, you are composing in plain text. You mut switch settings to "plain
text" each time you send to the list.
If you have earlier versions of AOL:

Since you cannot send "plain text" mail using any version of AOL except 9,
you will need to send your list mail using the alternative AOL web based
interface to AOL mail. The default format for email sent from AOL's web based
interface is "plain text".
To use AOL's web based mail interface:
Start a browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, AOL's embedded browser, etc.)
and go to www.aol.com
Enter your screen name and password at the top right of the page in the "AOL
Members Sign On" section and click "Sign On".
Click on the Mailbox Icon under the "Welcome <screenname>"
Use this email interface in very much the same way as the regular AOL
screen, however the default is now "plain text" rather than HTML.
We look forward to your participation on the NIFL Discussion Lists.
