We're just days away from the airing of "The New Americans," a seven-hour PBS miniseries premiering March 29, 30 & 31. The series focuses on the search for the American Dream through the eyes of today's immigrants and refugees. From Nigeria, India, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and the Israeli-occupied West Bank, each family has come with different hopes. "The New Americans" explores the dreams of these newcomers before they leave their homelands and follows their first years in America. In an EFF ESOL classroom, selected scenes could be used to talk about the various cultural role adjustments that adults make as they transition to the U.S., to elicit the challenges that students have in navigating life in the U.S., and to discuss the skills that the characters need or are using as they make their transition. ABE teachers who have seen the film have said that most of the issues facing the "new" Americans are common to their students, too - challenges accessing and understanding the health care system, profiling by police, unaffordable housing, etc. To access a variety of educational resources related to the film, go to: http://www.itvs.com/outreach/newamericans/resources.html Once there, you can scroll to "THE NEW AMERICANS Series Guide and Activity Book," which includes community discussion activities and activities for adult ESOL and ABE.
